County Attorney Collections History
The Fine Collection Division was initiated in 1992 under the direction of County Attorney, Tom Ferguson. Since its inception, it has collected more than thirteen million dollars in fines, court costs, and attorney fees owed to the State of Iowa. In addition, the program has brought in many thousands of dollars in victim damages and criminal surcharges.
Presently, the County Attorney Collections program has expanded to include five legal assistants working full time at the local level to collect state judgments against offenders who are delinquent in paying court debt (90 days past disposition without payment plan, or 3 missed monthly payments on a monthly installment plan). Whenever possible, collection staff facilitate a way for individuals to obtain one payment plan to repay court debt according to their income level. The program also offers assistance in driver's license reinstatement (DOT) and lifts of vehicle registration holds (County Treasurer) for individuals who qualify.
